Hand Targeting

Step 1

Say the word “Touch” before offering an open hand directly in front of your dog’s nose, about 2 inches away.

Allow your dog to come to your hand, do not press your hand to his nose.

Step 2

Use your marker word “Yes” or a clicker the moment his nose touches your palm.

If your dog is hesitant to come to your hand, you may tuck a treat between your fingers to entice him.

Step 3

Reward your dog very close to where your target hand is.

You want him to anticipate treats in the vicinity of the target hand.

How is Targeting useful?

  • It can be used as a “steering wheel” for loose leash walking.

  • It is a less invasive way to move your dog from point A to point B.

  • It can help keep your dog still and focused front during veterinary exams or grooming.

  • It can be used as an informal recall.

Tips!

  • Switch up which hand you practice targeting with. Don’t accidentally cause your dog to favor one hand over the other!

  • If your dog knows a “paw” trick and is confused as to which you are asking for, make sure your are consistent with your presentation! Asking for “paw” your palm could be vertical in orientation, while “Touch” your hand could be horizontal.
